Ep 98. Paradise

4/3/26

Citrus and Spool are flying over the city. Spool shouts while pointing down with his metal pipe, It's down there. In the next panel, They hover in front of Spool's apartment building. The building is named Stillpoint Place apartments. Citrus says, Well, lucky you. No giant meat hive.
Inside of the apartment complex lobby, the windows are shattered and covered in bloody handprints. Citrus and Spool walk together. Citrus asks, Did you, want me to break your door down? Spool asks, What? Oh, no. I've still got my keys. Spool says, I just have to dig around in my hole. He emphasizes the word hole. Citrus looks off to the side, the whites of his eyes showing. He looks back towards Spool, about to say something, when Spool says, They're probably stuck to my sticker. Citrus says quietly, Right.
Walking down a hallway together, the two are flushed. Spool looks disgruntled, thinking, I can't believe I kissed him. He tasted bitter. He repeats to himself the word stupid over and over. I actually invited him to my room? Spool! Your apartment's full of. He stops walking, looking shocked as he drops his metal pipe on the floor. He says, Ack. The onomatopoeia says, Tunk. Citrus' tail is wagging.
Realizing Spool has stopped moving, Citrus also stops and turns around, confused. After a short time skip, the two are outside of Spool's bedroom. Spool asks Citrus, Will you really? Citrus stares at the door, silent.
Spool stands outside of the open door as Citrus approaches him from inside. Citrus' shadow casts across the carpeted floor. Citrus carries a dirty bird cage past Spool, which Spool stares at in shock. Inside of the cage is a dead bird, and everything inside is covered in bird droppings. From Spool's perspective looking down, a single small blue feather rests on the floor.
Spool sits on his bed, staring ahead at Citrus. His walls are covered in pictures and photos of birds. Black paper cranes hang from his ceiling, and an un-ironed rainbow flag hangs above his bed. The posters contain bird puns, one with an owl saying Hoo do you think you are? And a flamingo poster saying You are flamazing. On the other side of the room, Citrus stares back, nervous. A budgie poster is on the wall. In closer shots, Spool can be seen crying, and Citrus can be seen sweating.
Spool says to Citrus, This is your fault. Citrus asks, How could I have known you had a. Spool cuts him off, saying, I really really do hate you. He hiccups in the middle of his sentence. He continues, saying, You wouldn't have cared. You. Just kill me. Citrus says quietly, I won't. Citrus begins to cry as well.
Spool screams, I said kill me! Citrus embraces Spool, making a whump sound. Spool grips his coat hard, muttering Kill, kill me. Please. Citrus grits his teeth, saying, Never.
Spool asks quietly, Citrus. Do you really love me? Citrus says, Madly. Spool says, You've taken everything from me. Citrus says, I can't help being what I am. I'd give it all back if I could. You just, I'm sorry.
He continues. In what circumstance, could someone love me without getting hurt? You cannot. Please understand. It's a miracle. That we have this city to ourselves. Food is here. Shelter. It's all free now. And you.
Spool perks up when he hears Citrus say, I owe you my life. Let's change our deal. Citrus says, I am starving to death. But I won't feed on you. Let me waste away in your arms.
Citrus says, It's your turn to take everything. He slumps over on Spool's bed. Spool sits up, looking a little awkward. Spool asks, Can I make the new deal myself, actually? Can I just do whatever the fuck I want? Citrus says quietly, Okay.
Spool gets up and walks to the hallway of his apartment room. He says, I'm gonna eat whatever's still good in here. Then, just, you snack on me. Carefully. Okay? Citrus says quietly again, Okay. His face is flushed red with embarrassment. Spool messes with things in his kitchen, making a clank clank sound. Citrus thinks to himself, repeating the word stupid in his head.
