Ep 87. Red Eyes

Dynamite nervously stares into the razor pack's cave as the Packmother, offscreen, says, I have questions for you. Come here. As he steps into the cave, she continues, This, friend of yours, before trailing off. The Mushroom Spore, held in Packmother's arms, raises a tiny hand. Dynamite stammers, I, I can, explain.

Packmother sternly says, No. Don't waste my time. I ask and you answer. Now, how was this child able to come back from death before my packmates' very eyes? Dynamite trembles as he walks closer to Bic, Packmother, and Harry, beginning, Well, um.

Well, her head kind of, I mean, when she dies, it explodes, and she kind of has this, um. As Dynamite stammers on, Packmother's expression grows darker and more intimidating, until suddenly she interrupts with a stern, Why? Dynamite asks, Why? Packmother clarifies, Why does your friend do this? Baby Mushroom sticks a hand in her mouth. Dynamite, unsure, answers, Because she's a, mushroom?

Packmother and Harry continue to glare for a moment, unimpressed, before exchanging exasperated glances. Packmother gently lifts the Mushroom spore's chin with one claw as she says, You know less about the world than I thought. The spore looks up at her with its little red eyes, a thin line of drool dripping down its chin.

Expression suddenly looking sadder, Packmother continues, Your "schools" don't teach you about the objects you surround yourselves with. Nor how to feed yourselves. What is the point of it all? Dynamite's eyes go big and shiny as he says, I agree completely. Packmother continues, Your friend descends from Faux. The late lawless king of the "Old Expanse". Behind her, a shot of Faux can be seen, several of her eyes open as if to look over the scene.

Packmother carefully pulls at the spore's eyelid with one claw to show off its eyes, saying, These red eyes explain everything to me. The next panel shows a fully-grown mushroom with a spore curled up inside her head as Packmother explains, A hidden power is a faux object's birthright. Your friend's power is to return from death. If all mushrooms could do this, I would know about it. This information surprises Dynamite.

Dynamite asks, Lawless king? While Bic rolls their eyes, Harry grins and answers, Yep. Strongest objects alive. Like my father. Shocked, Dynamite asks Packmother, You're married to the strongest guy alive?! Packmother answers, Nonsense. We migrated together thrice and popped out three kids. Bic lifts a paw, asking, Um, Packmother. shouldn't we talk about something else?

Packmother scowls, and Bic in the background looks like they regret their decision to speak up as she growls, That's right, I have a new job for you, Bic. Supervise him. Bic starts waving their paws, stepping in front of a quiet Dynamite as they complain, Wait! I was really good at water! Packmother continues, You'll watch the Mushroom as well. If what the boy says is true, it will "regrow" in 2 days.

Harry can fetch water with Gil. Both Bic and Harry seem unhappy with this arrangement, but neither of them say anything, with Harry meeting Gil's eyes for a moment before looking away.

The next few panels show the next few days in camp as Mushroom regrows. First, Dynamite sits next to the spore as she eats a rotting animal. Beside them, Bic covers their mouth, nauseous, while Venus and Schick act grossed out. In the background, Gil can be seen struggling to carry a water jug across the camp. Next, Bic lifts a screaming and crying hyphal knot as she holds a large branch over her head, Venus clinging to Dynamite as Schick runs away with a big bruise on his head. In the background, Dolly and Billie can be seen moving across the camp. Finally, in the last panel, Mushroom is fully grown again and apologizing to Venus and Schick with Dynamite's help. In the background, Harry rests a paw on Gil's head as Gil lies exhausted on a rock. In the sky, massive flocks of crows can be seen flying overhead.

Later, in the den, Dynamite and Mushroom are building up dirt. Dynamite asks, Mushroom? Mushroom responds, Yeah? Dynamite continues, When you, um, "re spawn", do you remember everything? Mushroom, glancing back, answers, I do. She then stares down at a clump of dirt in her hand as Dynamite says, I don't wanna pry, but I feel like, we don't talk enough about it.

Mushroom, fully turning to look at him, replies, You know I'm bad at talking about feelings. Dynamite, turning to look at her, asks, Isn't it too much for one person to handle? Mushroom replies, It's just how I am. Suddenly, their conversation is interrupted by a yell of, Hey! What are you doing?!

Venus and Schick stand at the entrance to the den. As Venus wipes his eyes, Schick screams, What are you doing with my fucking dirt?! Looking back at Mushroom and Dynamite, it's revealed that they've built furniture out of all the dirt, including an armchair, table, a welcome mat, and a statue of Dynamite's chiseled and manly face. As if it were obvious, Mushroom answers, We're making this hole a home.
