Ep 103. Night Lights

6/12/26

Music plays loudly over a warmly lit scene. Objects are seen from the knee down walking through a crowded scene. Text describes laughter and chattering. A rainbow lollipop moves an herbivore tag away from their face to accept a food offering from someone in a carnivore robe. She says, Thank you. Both characters have scales. Fried enoki mushrooms are given to her using chopsticks. The next panel is a large bird's eye shot of a parade. Large inflatable fish are being walked down the center of the brick road and glow bright warm colors. Overhead are strings of lanterns. On either side of the road are hundreds of people in robes. Some of the objects on parade floats are throwing candy towards onlooking children.
A tall aquatic bestial object in a carnivore robe is handing out robes to people showing up at the entrance to the festival. The sign above him is illuminated with the words, Sea of Lights. Tall banners behind him describe the four diets that the robes are themed after. There is an herbivore banner that contains a long and narrow fish, a carnivore banner that contains a tuna fish, an omnivore banner that contains a sea turtle, and a detritivore banner that contains a sea pig. Gum approaches the tall object from the foreground, who appears to be a lamp post as well as a faux object. He grins at her with large sharp teeth, saying, Gum. He hands her a carnivore robe, saying, I think this suits you best. Hidden in the folded robe is a red envelope with a golden tassel. He points over his shoulder, saying, The changing rooms are back there. Don't waste any time. Gum begins walking towards the changing rooms.
Inside of the changing room, Gum has the carnivore robe on and draped around her waist and elbows. She is missing three scars on her back as well as the one over her eye. She opens and reads the letter in the envelope. It reads, Wick. Child of the Night. Proceed with caution. White furred bestial with candle body. Nine prehensile parts, synthetic. Transformer, Charmer, Elemental, fire. Disposal required for inner societal killing. Target to be killed. Dispose in ocean. Bring back proof. Burn this letter. A stamp with a crow is on the sheet of paper labeled Child of the Night. A photograph is attached to the letter with a paperclip. The photograph is of Wick's face.
Objects fill an elegant ocean themed dining hall. Music plays from the stage in the center of the room while people talk, dance, and offer food to each other. A self serving food bar can be seen in the back of the room. Gum walks through the building with the carnivore tag covering her face. Text says step step. She stops in front of a door in the hallway. It fades into view.
Text describes the sound of lock picking tools scraping the insides of a door lock. A do not disturb sign is hanging from the door. After picking the lock, Gum slightly opens the door to peek inside. Her eyes widen and her face flushes red as she thinks, Wrong room. Gum stands panicking in front of another door, thinking, Wrong room again. In front of a third door, Gum leans away thinking, Ugh. A speech bubble snakes out from inside the crack in the door, containing imagery of two male symbols kissing. Text describes the sounds of a fourth door being lock picked open. Gum thinks, Maybe she's in this one.
Gum peers through the sliver in the door as text describes the sound of it slowly creaking open. Her eye is wide with surprise. Across the private garden, Wick is sitting on the edge of a brick tree planter with two women in her lap. She shouts, Eek! We're occupied! The garden is filled with flowers and pink petals falling from a cherry blossom tree. Two large orange windows are on either side of the private garden, but the glass is too thick and frosted to see through. Gum enters the courtyard, closing and locking the door behind her. Wick looks on in silence and confusion.
Gum says, Wick. I've come for you. Spherical paper lanterns begin to fill the sky. Wick continues to stare with her mouth slightly agape before it transforms into a snarky grin. Her fangs poke out as she says, Ah, Party pooper. Gum wraps her hand around the hilt of her sword.
Gum says, Get away from those girls. Wick asks, Who, these two? You know, I envy you. Wick drops the girls to the ground, who are both already dead. Blue wisps trail from their mouths as they hit the ground. Wick says, I'd love to be able to wear a tag too. But they don't make those for people like me. Still, I helped myself to the food. Gum grits her teeth in shock.
Wick continues, In fact, I'm still hungry. And you're looking tasty. Gum says, Cut the cutesy shit. You'll want to take your beheading seriously. She begins pulling the sword further from the sheath. Text describes the sound of the blade scraping the sheath. Wick begins to stand up, asking, You think I'm cute?
Wick positions herself on the edge of the brick planter, ready to jump up. She says, I'll show you cute. She leaps over Gum's head, her body transforming to resemble a nine tailed fox mid air. Wick's feet hit the grass, kicking up dust. The purple wax from her body splatters against the ground in small drops that crawl back towards her body and up her legs.
Wick, resembling a kitsune made of blue fire says, Let's hope they trained you well, stupid girl. She stands defensively, growling. Gum's sword is in the foreground, drawn and reflecting the light of Wick's body.
