Ep 83. First Contact

8/22/25

Establishing shot, Carrot's lab, Fossil, floating in the water of her think tank, speaks into a tape recorder. She says, Entry Eight. Strange weather. It is currently winter. But it's, too cold. A giant anomaly has descended to the center of new, ever-present storm clouds. It vaguely resembles the bone structure of a vertebrate. Attached to nothing observable.
The next panel shows Fossil's legs beneath the surface of the water, her tail floating behind her. It's followed by shots of her legs swinging, her facial expression, and her hand around the tape recorder. She continues, I suspect this anomaly to be the direct result of the parasitic outbreak. I've observed similar bone structures on assimilated objects. Some, but not all. I am unsure of the purpose, knowing with utmost certainty that this synthetic organism was programmed by an individual person, or group of people. Presumably as an act of terrorism. In the most likely case, the anomaly influences weather patterns. This theory is supported by a recent monsoon that consisted almost entirely of parasitic larvae and eggs.
There is a wide shot of the cluttered lab room, with the plastic bag parasite visible in the specimen chamber as Fossil walks past in a towel. She continues, the ectopic growths on assimilated objects, huff, may be an unintended result of meddling with animal DNA. As Fossil speaks, she turns up the thermostat, the button beeping several times as she presses it. She says, They could also support organ space theory, if the parasite needs to pass through an interdimensional barrier to seize motor function in the brain.
Fossil is then seen standing in Carrot's bedroom, recorder still in one hand and flat gift box in the other. Looking tired, she says, In the process of passing the barrier, the internals may get displaced, and are pushed through realities. She examines the gift, reading that the tag says, to Era, with a heart beside it. She continues, And we have no way of knowing if the warping of these structures is due to passing the rift, their lack of use over generations, or parasitic stimulation. Once she is done speaking, she stops the recording, throwing the tape recorder onto the bed.
She looks over the now-opened gift with an upset expression, reading the attached note. The note reads, Hey Era! It gets really cold in the Rings, so I thought I'd finally get around to using that body that got donated to science a few years ago and paid the best tailor in High Society to whip you up something nice. PS, sorry for hitting on you at Tech's hotpot thing last year, I didn't know you were. And then it cuts off. Fossil pulls the gift on.
She says, Let's see this in a mirror, going to look herself over wearing the gift. It's a full outfit, consisting primarily of a leopard print fur coat, but also a loose shirt and heeled boots. She scoffs and says, At least it's not made of his socks.
The next panel shows Painkiller at the control panel of the radio tower, leaning back in their chair and bouncing their leg as they read the operator's manual. Frustrated, they complain, Ugh! What do you mean long wave? I forgot that I don't like studying. Putting the manual down, they get up and stretch, adding, I'll just study something else!
As Painkiller walks across the radio tower to a table with chemistry equipment, it shows that the room is completely littered with trash. Painkiller sheepishly giggles and says, It's starting to look like my old college apartment in here, it's just missing the hard liquor bottles, and the fruit flies. They move on to looking at Carrot's note cards, saying, His handwriting isn't that bad. His tone is just, very unprofessional. As they begin to follow the instructions on the cards, they excitedly add, We have so much in common! He sounds cool.
Painkiller continues, Step Five, mix the resulting green fluid in first. Then the red. Very important. Okay. They pause for a moment, staring at both vials of fluid in their hands. Suddenly, they look disturbed, and the next panel is a shot of their hands holding the vials from their perspective, labeled Colorblind POV.
Painkiller says, This literally has to be green, squinting at a vial they're holding up by the top. There is a little red arrow pointing to it labelled Red. Smiling confidently, they drip the fluid into their beaker, only for it to explode in their face in a massive cloud of narcotic gas. There is a bang, several pops, and a hiss.
A box indicating their thoughts reads, Fuck! I hope the cards say what to do now! Tears pour from their eyes as they cough and reach for the cards, trying to force their eyes open to read. The next box says, Should I wash out my eyes with water? As they read the note, though, they're confused. The note says, in fancy red handwriting, Hello, Handsome. A pink vignette covers the edges of the panel.
Painkiller's eyes go wide, sweat dripping down their face as they say, Huh? What? Suddenly, hands cup their shoulders from behind, and the next panel reveals a strange pink apparition of Carrot leaning in to speak into Painkiller's ear. He says, You think about me an awful lot. TĂȘte de linotte, are you lonely?
