Ep 19. Hive

3/10/23

Comet sits relaxing on a woven mat in the grass, eyes closed. Opening their eyes they slowly get to their feet. Looking up at the sky, they think, It's, too quiet.
The next shot, they're standing in the field, holding a bushel of grains and their flute. They blow a sharp note to call the birds, but nothing comes. As the wind wooshes past and they stare up confusedly at the sky, the colors of the scene desaturate. Strange, unidentified petals blow overhead.
And, I'm out of water, Comet thinks. They hold up an almost empty jar of water, standing over a box with another two empty jars inside. Grabbing a jug to fill with water, they start off towards the nearest access point. More of the strange flowers can be seen at their feet.
As she grows closer, however, horror begins to take over her face.
The access point, which is a white concrete wall with a large grate extruding from the water, is absolutely covered in blood. Splatters of it seem to cover the wall, with dozens of crows lying dead on the ground below. The water itself runs red, and the grass around it appears dark and sickly. The sky above is full of dark clouds. Comet approaches the water.
First, she looks up at the sky, and then down at her feet. Inside the water, she can see dead fish lying just below the surface, the water's edge full of tiny little flies stopping to drink.
Back in her tent, Comet apprehensively watches her water jug boil. The water is a strange, murky color when she jars it, but she reluctantly drinks it anyway before going to bed. Lying there unable to sleep, she turns her head, staring out the crack in her tent.
In her memory, we see the water again. We see the white wall covered in blood splatters, and the piles of dead crows.
And past the grate, we see a Hivecore forming, flanked by two other parasites. A bright red crystal structure coming off its top hums softly.
