Dynamite's paw can be seen reaching without claws for a bird, which has already flown out of sight. In the next panel, he screams, Come back! No! as he chases down a fleeing mouse, running upright. The next three panels show him skidding against the ground, in three different lightings and three different places. He has been failing over and over again. On the final one, Mushroom steps into frame, looking down at him and saying, You need to use your claws, Dynamite.
Dynamite sits up, rubbing at his head as he asks, What else can I do? Mushroom squints as she tries to think of alternatives, each idea crossed out and discarded in her mind. She thinks, and then ignores, Just do it right, Maybe you can eat canned food, and Let's just search buildings.
Finally, Mushroom says, There are way more animals in Outer Ring. Dynamite's first reaction is to look afraid. When he begins to think about it, though, Mushroom looks surprised, raising her eyebrows. Finally, Dynamite shouts, No way! Mushroom, expecting it, frowns in annoyance. She says, But, I, Dyn, being interrupted over and over by Dynamite shouting, No, no, no!
Later, the both of them are sleeping in Mushroom's room, Mushroom on top of her moss bed and Dynamite on the floor beside her. Dynamite is curled up as much as he can be, claws scraping at the floor as his mind is flooded with thoughts of Outer Ring. He pants heavily, his stomach gurgling with hunger. Suddenly, a shattering sound shocks Mushroom awake, her eyes glowing red in the dark.
She sits up, staring at her shattered bedroom window, and says, We have a front door. She climbs out of the window, though, looking down at Dynamite's pawprints leading into the forest. Quietly, Mushroom follows the trail.
The trail of paw prints leads Mushroom to a dark campsite in the woods, messy with the evidence of a struggle. Both shoe prints and a fresh trail of blood lead her away from the camp.
Mushroom quickly follows the new trail, stopping suddenly as she spots something ahead. Eyes hollow, she drops to her knees, wrapping her arms around a kneeling Dynamite. Dynamite is covered in blood, claws over his mouth and eyes cloaked in shadow.
Together, they both stare at the gored and bloodied arm of an object's corpse, shredded open to reveal bone. Beside the husk's bloodied hand is a broken glass, itself clean. Mushroom's expression turns from hollow to worried as Dynamite looks up at what he's done. He is crying. Mushroom says, Dynamite.
You're doing, exactly, what you need to be doing. Carefully, Mushroom holds the backs of Dynamite's paws, slowly lowering them to stare at his bloody claws and paw pads.
Mushroom stands, then, carrying Mushroom on her hip, and with her other hand she grabs the husk and begins to drag it away with them. Dynamite clings to her, allowing her to carry him back home as she says, We'll make this work.
Mushroom wipes the blood from Dynamite's face and brushes his fuse, both of them resting on the couch in her house. Outside, the husk of the object Dynamite killed lies untouched, cast in beams of light from the blinds. Mushroom stares at Dynamite's face for a moment, holding him, before suddenly kissing him on the cheek. He growls and complains, Stop! Dude! as she snuggles him, blushing as she pulls away. Mushroom, smiling fondly, says, Sorry.
I like the face you make. The next day, both Dynamite and Mushroom stand over the husk in the backyard. Dynamite hugs himself, obviously unsure, while Mushroom pokes the body with a stick.
Mushroom says, This is natural, you know. Dynamite, still unsure, asks, What would our friends think? Mushroom answers, I'm happy he's alive, probably. Dynamite crouches down, lifting the husk's arm and sinking his teeth in.
Suddenly, Dynamite's eyes go blank. Behind him is a drawing of a jaguar with pinprick green eyes, showing his animal instinct taking over as soon as he tastes the fresh meat.
Violently Dynamite rips away at the husk's arm, while Mushroom looks on in shock. Looking almost afraid, she asks, Dynamite? Dynamite looks up at her with a hollow, haunted expression, hesitating before asking, What? Looking curious, Mushroom quickly leans down, asking, Can I try it? Dynamite is shocked.
